I listen to a large array of music with the only glaring omission being Country and any type of ‘Ranchera’ type music. That’s just not my jive, baby.
Having said that, Pop music makes up a large amount of my musical collection. Some people are surprised to learn that I listen to any Pop at all, seemingly too superficial for such an introspective person, but like most things in my life there is a reason behind this seemingly out-of-character trend.
I first started to listen to Pop music in the late 90’s at a group home I lived in when I was 12 called ‘The Pointe’ in Santa Teresa, NM. This group home held a spectrum of girls; some were hard core troublemakers, some were neglected and others like myself, simply didn’t have anywhere to go. But music brought us together. It didn’t matter which corridor you found yourself walking in, the sound of Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera filled the air. No matter what differences we had, if the radio began playing ‘Wannabe’ by the Spice Girls everyone started singing.
As I got older, pop became more prevalent in my life. In High School, I met my best friend Juan whom I wrote about HERE. It’s actually rather funny how we became BFF’s…he was excruciatingly annoying at first, but his persistent and infectious happy-go-lucky attitude made my heart melt and he had won me over. His music of choice? Madonna, Britney, Kylie and Kelly (Clarkson) all of which eventually became the soundtrack for our summer hi jinx and spontaneous adventures.
Now in 2010, I continue to listen to Pop and still sing along to my favorite songs. I thought I’d share some of my favorites this year:
- ‘Misery’ by Maroon 5
- ‘Wonderful Electric’ by Goldfrapp
- ‘Paparazzi’ by Lady Gaga
- ‘Popular’ by The Veronicas
- ‘Eat You Up’ by BOA
- ‘Perfect Lover’ by Britney Spears
- ‘Isaac’ by Madonna
